ABOUT THE INSTITUTION

Noorul Islam University comprising of Noorul Islam College of Engineering has more than 20 years of standing in Higher Education field. The University is run by the Noorul Islam Center for Higher Education (NICHE) which has been declared as a Deeme-to-be-University by Ministry of Higher Education, Govt, of India vide Notification No. F.9-51/2004-4.3 at 8^th December 2008. Janab Dr. A.P. Majeed Khan having more than 50 years of experience in Educational field is the Chancellor of the University.

The university campus is in the serene and lush green base of velimalai, a spectacular part of western Ghat Hill near the famous Padmanabhapuram Palace. It is only 1.5 Km interior towards the foothills of the mountains from Kumaracoil Junction on the Kanyakumari Thiruvananthapuram National Highway (NH-47).

Intially B.E. in Computer Science and Engineering and B.E. in ECE were the only courses offered at the start of the institution. B.E. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) was started in the year of 1993, Mechanical Engineering (Mech.) in 1995, Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering (EIE) in 1998. Information Technology (IT) in 1999, Areonautical Engineering (AE) in 2004, Civil Engineering in 2006 and Marine Engineering in 2007. The Marine Engineering course is approved by Director General of Shipping, Mumbai.

Post-graduate courses in Management Studies (MBA) and Computer Applications (MCA) were started in the academic year 1994-1995. In addition, a five year integrated technical course in Software Engineering (M.Sc. –SE), two year post-graduate course in Software Engineering (M.Sc. –IT), two year post graduate course in Software Engineering (M.Sc. – SE) and a three year under-graduate course in Computer Technology (B.Sc – CT) were started apart from the engineering courses in an adjacent and separate campus. During 2006-07, M.Sc. – integrated PG courses.

To crown it all, the academic year 2002-2003 witnessed the advent of the post-graduate courses in engineering. Coinciding with the Decennial Celebrations of the college, the start of M.E. courses in Computer Science and Engineering and Communication Systems heralded the ushering in of a new era of higher academic pursuits at NICE. Two other courses – M.E. in Applied Electronics and M.E. in computer Integrated Manufacture (CIM) were added during the academic year 2003 – 2004. M.E. in Thermal Engineering (ICE) and M.E. in Control and Instrumentation Engineering were sanctioned in 2006 and added to the galore of the academic repertoire of NICE. What began as a humble educational institution with two under – graduate engineering courses and 80 students in the year 1989 has now metamorphosed itself  into a  gigantic educational  institution with 13 UG courses 11 PG courses, 8 Ph.D. programmes, and 4 M.S. programmes, and with 242 teaching staff, 372 non-teaching staff and 3700 students.

During the academic year 2004-2005, the college applied for Deemed to be University status from University Grants Commission, New Delhi. A Presentation at UGC Office, New Delhi, regarding the infrastructure, instructional facilities and innovative programs launched in the institution was successfully given by the Head of the Institution on request as a pre-requisite for the conferment of deemed university status and result has been the present position indeed. The college has now become an University.
